I have found good instructions on the internet for curing bone for use in lutherie however for the time being I am considering buying bulk cured bone. Does anyone know of a source for bulk bone? I would like think enough stock to make 3/16" nuts.
Any help/advice is appreciated. Also I am located in southern Ontario, Canada, thanks!

Yea, that works well in the states because you can buy bones for dogs, and process that into blanks. When I was in Taiwan dog bones do NOT exist (no idea why, probably has to do with mad cow disease). Only ground up bone dust dog treat existed.

You can buy processed bone blanks from inlaidartist on ebay for around 1 dollar per blank if you buy 100 at a time.

Maybe in the states they still sell dog bones. But most are now cut into stew bones. I searched even on eBay. Soup bones guys.

A Smokehouse close to me butchers cows.
They smoke some of the bigger bones for dogs.

I get them & cut them up for nuts & saddles.
They have a beautiful (aged) color.

I do not know if they have a website.

I have used chunks of Cow femur from a pet shop used for dog chewing but was not sure about the curing process used on them. Check with a butcher if you want to process the bone from a raw state. For not much money, you can get very high quality saddle and nut stock from Christie Song here: http://www.chrislintrading.com/index.html She is based in California and very responsive to email and phone. Let her know what you need and if nut and saddle making is new to you, also ask for some seconds to learn on.

First, get a dog.
A smallish one.
Then, go to the butcher and buy a soup bone.
Let the dog clean it up for you.
Let it sit around for a while,
and cut it into nut blanks.
I had to do that,
because I make lap steel gits,
which require tall nuts.

That right there ^^ is a creative approach.

dont forget to degrease them, so the fat doesnt leach into the wood over time.

Yup. Boil them to get the meat off, soak them in soapy water for a week or so, then clean with diluted hydrogen peroxide.

Or forget all that and buy bone blanks from Musicians Friend like I do.
